Thanks to the efforts of advocates, students, experts, and other members of the local community, the roads around the University of Central (UCF) will soon be safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Orange County Commission and UCF recently finalized a plan to invest nearly $9 million in new crosswalks, brighter street lighting, wider sidewalks, and other safety-focused improvements.
The announcement comes after students and residents have long faced troublesome risks getting to and from campus and the neighboring areas. The Orlando Sentinel reports that eight people have died and more than 200 have been injured in the last 10 years.
Improvements to Come, But Concerns Remain
While the proposed infrastructure project will undoubtedly make the roads around the UCF campus safer for walkers and bike riders, they fall short of fully addressing some of the biggest factors leading to pedestrian accidents. For example, one change that was not made was to reduce the speed limit on roads where other improvements are being targeted. Speeding is a common factor in pedestrian and bicycle accidents, and reducing the speed limit in highly trafficked pedestrian areas – like college campuses and beach towns – can significantly improve pedestrian safety.
Another major factor in pedestrian accidents is distracted driving. Currently, texting-while-driving is a “secondary offense” in Florida. This means that the police cannot pull drivers over for texting behind the wheel, but rather can only issue texting tickets after pulling drivers over for other offenses. Despite the widely publicized risks of distracted driving, far too many people continue to text, use social media, and take selfies in the driver’s seat.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident
If you get injured in a car accident as a pedestrian or bicycle rider, what should you do?
Your first step should always be to seek prompt medical attention. The forces involved in vehicle collisions can easily cause severe injuries to unprotected walkers and riders, and certain internal injuries can become extremely dangerous if not treated promptly. As a result, step number one after an accident should always be to see a doctor, even if you think you feel fine.
In addition to seeking prompt treatment for their injuries, pedestrians and bicyclists involved in vehicle collisions should:
- Take photos of the vehicle and the scene of the accident if possible. Photograph your injuries and any damage to your bicycle and other personal property (clothing, jewelry, electronics, etc.) as well.
- Write down everything you remember. It is important that you tell your story, and taking notes will help you remember your version of the events.
- Learn more your rights. As an injured pedestrian or bicyclist in Florida, you may be entitled to significant financial compensation. Visit our video library for more information.
